Latest Iowa Poll Was Biased Towards Democrats and Liberals, CEO of Iowa Polling Company Admits
J. Ann Selzer, CEO of Polling Company Selzer & Co who provided the data confirms Trump's claims of bias, but blames this bias on the data output...and not on her "dirty little fingers."
The latest Iowa Poll caused “shock” and “surprise” across the country when it showed Kamala Harris ahead of Donald Trump in Iowa by three points, a state that Trump won by eight points in 2020. But the only shock and surprise was when the pollster who collected the data admitted to it being biased due to the data coming mostly from Democratic/Liberal “likely voters”.
This shocking admission came from J. Ann Selzer, President of Selzer and Co., who collected the polling data for the Des Moines Register’s Iowa Poll from approximately eight hundred “likely voters” in Iowa. She admitted this only after being shown a video of Donald Trump correctly stating that Selzer’s polling focused mainly on Democratic and Liberal voters in Iowa. Here’s what happened.
On November 2, 2024 the Des Moines Register dropped a bombshell headline when it reported that it’s “Iowa Poll” showed a surprising shift of three points in favor of Kamala Harris over Donald Trump for the win among Iowa voters. The headline was quite sensational:
“Iowa Poll: Kamala Harris leapfrogs Donald Trump to take lead near Election Day. Here's how (The nationally recognized Iowa Poll shows Kamala Harris picking up support from women to surpass Donald Trump in a ruby-red state he has won twice)”
Legacy media was quick to flood the news cycle with sensational headlines of about the Iowa Poll results. Their headlines were equally sensational to those of the Des Moines Register. For example, on Saturday at 7:46 PM EDT, Jennifer Agiesta of CNN printed the headline stating:
“Trump no longer leads in a state he carried twice, according to new Iowa Poll”. (https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/02/politics/iowa-poll-harris-trump/index.htmlOn).
Less then two hours later, The Guardian also jumped on the bandwagon with the headline:
“Harris grabs unexpected las-minute lead over Trump in Iowa poll.” (https://www.yahoo.com/news/harris-grabs-unexpected-last-minute-011402379.html) .
Later that night at 9:40PM, Dan Magan used the headline:
“Shock poll shows Harris leading Trump in Iowa”, (https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/02/harris-leading-trump-iowa-poll-presidential-election-.html)
But by Monday morning, the only “shock” and “surprise” was when J. Ann Selzer, the President of Selzer and Co., the polling firm that conducted the poll on behalf of Des Moines Register and Mediacom, all but confirmed accusations made by Donald Trump on Sunday that Selzer’s polling data was biased towards Democrats. During a Monday interview on CNN with host Anderson Cooper, Selzer admitted that the data was biased, after Cooper played a clip of Donald Trump accusing the sample of voters used for the Iowa Poll as being “highly skewed towards democrats and liberals”:
When Cooper asked J. Ann Selzer to respond to Trump’s accusation, she gave the following answer:
“We align things with a known population, and we extract from a larger group people who meet our definition of ‘likely voters’, and that is people who’ve already voted, and people who say they will definitely vote. So when former President Trump says we interviewed more Democrats, well, that’s what came out of our data. We did nothing to make that happen. I am a big believer of keeping my fingers off, my dirty fingers off of the data.” -J. Ann Selzer. (https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/04/politics/video/ann-selzer-iowa-poll-trump-reaction-ac360-digvid)
Based on Selzer’s own comments, the data used for the Iowa Poll was, in fact, skewed towards Democrats. She did not deny the bias but instead stated that they had to use the data because that was the data made available through her own “weighting” system (a system which she created and controls).
Clearly the results of this poll are biased as the sample of voters selected and used was bias. But at the time of this writing, legacy media is continues to hype this poll as a “game changer” that favors Harris. The media also continues to imply that Trump is wrong to claim bias in this latest Iowa Poll, despite this public admission (by the very person responsible for that same data) which literally confirms Trumps claim that this was a biased poll. But when dealing with biased media riding the hype created by a biased poll in heavily biased news and information ecosystem, the only statement free from any bias is a simple and demonstrable fact:
Donald Trump was right…again.
Note: According to the National Review, Selzer also admitted that her client, the Des Moines Register (who publishes the “Iowa Poll”), won’t release the cross-tabs of the poll (aka the raw data), thus limiting its transparency.
